How Tendi works
A plain-language guide. Last updated: October 10, 2026.
In short
This page explains Tendi in plain words. It is not a legal agreement. Tendi is licensed to you under Apple's standard End User Licence Agreement, which applies when you download an app from the App Store. The Privacy Policy covers your data in detail.
- You check in with one mood. Everything else is optional.
- Your entries build a record you can read, search and take with you.
- Insights describe that record. They do not explain it, and they do not tell you what to do.
- Your journal is stored on your device by default. There is no Tendi account.
Checking in
A check-in starts with one mood. If it helps, add feelings, activities, a note, a photo or a voice recording. If it doesn't, don't. Save is always a deliberate tap, so nothing is recorded until you decide it is.
On Apple Watch you can log a mood from your wrist. It arrives in Tendi on your iPhone and joins the same record.
There are no streaks, no catching up and no deficit counters. Days without entries stay just that, not failures. Coming back after a break is just coming back.
Your record
Every saved check-in joins your record. Journal lists your entries, with search and filters for dates, moods, activities and notes. Month Map shows the month with each day coloured by the moods you recorded, and Year Map does the same for the year. Herbarium collects entries as pressed-flower specimens, a visual archive of what you recorded.
Important Days are dates you mark, like an anniversary or a move, so that your journal has context when you look back. They are context for you, not an input to Insights.
What Insights do, and what they don't
Insights summarise the entries you saved. Each pattern says what it rests on: how many entries, and which days, so you can judge it yourself.
Some patterns compare two parts of your record, for example days with an activity and days without it. That comparison describes what you recorded. It does not say that one thing led to the other, and Tendi does not draw that conclusion for you.
Tendi does not diagnose anything, and it does not tell you what to do next. It is a journaling tool, not a medical or crisis service. If something you notice worries you, talk to someone you trust or to a professional.
Where your journal lives
Your entries, notes, photos, recordings and insights are stored on your device by default. Tendi has no account system and no server that holds journal content.
If you turn on iCloud sync, your journal syncs between your devices through your personal Apple iCloud account. Tendi cannot read it. You can turn sync off in Settings at any time.
The Privacy Policy explains this in full, including HealthKit, optional analytics and what support emails contain.
Taking your journal with you
A full Tendi backup is designed for restoring your journal into Tendi, for example on a new iPhone. It can include photos and voice notes when you select those options.
JSON and CSV carry your entries for use elsewhere. PDF is a readable report rather than a backup.
Tendi can import Tendi backups, Daylio exports and compatible CSV files.
Export, import and restore need no payment and no account.
Optional extras, off until you turn them on
- Apple Health. Tendi can read sleep, steps and workouts for local context, and can write a state of mind sample where iOS supports it. Health data stays on your device.
- Reminders. One gentle evening nudge if you want it. It never turns into a streak.
- On-device AI. On supported iPhones, Tendi can use Apple's on-device model to improve related search and suggest prompts. It runs on your phone. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing trains a model.
- Analytics. Off by default. If you turn them on, Tendi sends usage counts, never journal content.
Support tools
Tendi includes breathing and grounding exercises and a link to Find a Helpline. They are simple support tools. They do not replace help from a person. If you are in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services.
Cost and licence
Tendi 1.0 launches free, with no ads, no subscriptions and no in-app purchases.
Tendi is licensed to you under Apple's standard End User Licence Agreement. The Licence agreement row in Tendi's Settings opens that agreement.
